FAQs

ZIJCAR

Who is ZIJCAR?
ZIJCAR is an all-new brand from one of the most trusted names in commercial vehicles, the Daimler Truck Group. We created ZIJCAR to focus on zero-emission urban mobility. In fact, ZIJCAR stands to make your transition to electric mobility easier. We bring everything you expect from an established OEM to your operation. You’ll have a worry-free experience thanks to our experienced dealer network, commercial vehicle telematics, long service intervals, and ZIJCAR Flexible Financing from Daimler Truck Financial Services.
What sets ZIJCAR’s vehicles apart from the competition?
Thanks to our global R&D department, our electric mobility platform has driven over 5 million real-world miles. This means worry-free operations due to the durability and reliability we’ve proven. These are commercial electric vehicles grounded in a legacy of experience.

An OEM-designed and factory-installed powertrain is backed by our best-in-class warranty. Our experienced dealers are ready to service the chassis and powertrain so you’ll be back on the road quickly.

We’ve made our active safety system standard to keep your business, the vehicle, and vulnerable road users safe. ABA, Active Side Guard Assist, and Lane Departure Warning are fully integrated into the digital instrument cluster and audio system.

Recharging batteries is another important consideration for EVs. Our vehicles support Level 3 DCFC charging up to 104kW with a CCS1 connector and J1772 Level 2 AC charging up to 14.9kW. Shorter charge times get you back on the road faster while alleviating range anxiety.

Charging

What’s the difference in charger styles?
You can pick an EV charger with either AC or DC output. This decision has a considerable impact on your charge time, charger investment, and your battery health. A good rule of thumb is to buy chargers that will charge as slowly as your operation can support.

Charge time is a key consideration. An overnight charge means you’ll need more chargers for your fleet. A charge time of an hour means you may be able to recharge while loading the truck mid-shift. To approximate the charge time, divide the battery capacity by the charger output.

All rechargeable batteries last longer with slower charging. This is true for electric vehicles, cell phones, laptops, or any rechargeable lithium-ion battery. We support DCFC if your operation needs it so you’ll likely have enough range for the life of the vehicle. However, the battery health at trade-in can affect its value. A battery with lower overall health will net you less than batteries in better shape.

AC chargers are the most accessible and preserve the battery better but charge much more slowly than DC chargers. DC chargers are the opposite – they require considerable investment but charge vehicles much faster. You can fully charge a ZIJCAR e18L from empty to full in 76 minutes using a 104kW DC charger vs 6 hours on a 19.6kW AC charger.

When considering DC chargers, we always recommend contacting your electricity supplier early in the process.
Do I need to buy my own charger? If so, how many?
ZIJCAR trucks are compatible with most public chargers but keep in mind their power output. If the charger has a CCS1 or J1772 connector, it will plug into the truck. Many are 7kW or 11kW, which are relatively low power, so will take a longer time to charge. Many websites are available to find public chargers by type, so you may be able to find one nearby.

We recommend one AC charger per vehicle for most applications. This lets you charge each vehicle overnight so you’re ready to go in the morning. For lower-mileage applications, you may be able to share chargers.
What is DC Charging?
DC chargers convert the AC electricity from the grid to DC, which is delivered to the vehicle’s batteries. DC chargers, like those from Detroit eFillTM, support higher power output than AC, so DC Fast Charge can charge a vehicle more quickly than Level 2 AC charging, with rates beyond 240kW. ZIJCAR vehicles can generally accept DC charging power up to 104kW.

DC charging usually requires more investment and involvement from the utility company. As always, rely on trained professionals or electricians to install your charging equipment.
What is Level 2 AC Charging?
Level 2 AC charging works by delivering AC electricity to the vehicle’s onboard charger, which converts it to DC, to charge the batteries. Level 2 refers to the AC voltage, which is supplied at 110V or 220V, and the charging power, which is between 6.6kW and 14.9kW. ZIJCAR vehicles can accept charging power up to 14.9kW. Some AC chargers require 3-phase power, so pay attention to the specs of the charger you’re considering. ZIJCAR recommends Siemens’ line of AC chargers. As always, rely on trained professionals or electricians to install your charging equipment.
Does ZIJCAR install chargers?
ZIJCAR dealers don’t install chargers. Installations vary from one site to the next so electricians or our friends at Detroit eConsulting are able to guide you along the process. Contact your dealer to get started with them.

For example, installing a Level 2 AC charging station is usually straightforward. Most simply require a 208/240VAC supply with a sufficiently rated circuit and breaker. Installing the higher-power DC Fast Charge stations usually requires more – a three-phase supply, additional hardware, and possibly additional capacity from the electrical utility.

Range anxiety

How far can I drive the truck?
You can expect to drive ZIJCAR L-size trucks 110-160 miles on a full charge. M-size trucks can go 70-110 miles on a full charge.
Why does my range vary from day to day?
Many factors affect the vehicle’s range. The load, ambient temperature, ancillary loads (like HVAC), aerodynamics, battery health, and driving style all play a role in the vehicle’s actual range.

To help preserve range in cold weather, ZIJCAR offers heated seats, windshield, and steering wheel to increase driver comfort without relying on the cab heater.
How long will the batteries last?
A variety of factors contribute to your battery’s normal depletion. Batteries have a lifespan that is generally related to charging behavior and thermal management. Faster charging will deteriorate a battery faster than slower charging.

ZIJCAR’s cooling system effectively manages heat generated in charging and discharging. Coupled with a limit of 104kW charge rate, the negative effect of fast charging is mitigated. This means you can rely on ZIJCAR’s batteries for many years.

Performance & Features

How much power does ZIJCAR’s powertrain generate?
ZIJCAR trucks use an integrated eAxle that combines the electric motor, inverter, and gearbox into a single unit. This eliminates mechanical torque losses of conventional powertrains and improves the regenerative braking effectiveness. The powertrain creates maximum power of 173HP/317ft lbf with a continuous power of 114HP/169 ft lbf.
How fast can I drive a ZIJCAR truck?
The maximum speed is limited to 64 mph.
What is regenerative braking?
Regenerative braking is a system that captures the energy generated from braking and recharges the batteries. In urban driving conditions, this can considerably extend the range of the truck. The regenerative brake system lets the driver choose from 4 different levels of resistance.
Can I use my ZIJCAR truck for towing?
No towing provision has been tested just yet, so ZIJCAR trucks cannot be used for towing trailers.
Are ZIJCAR trucks safe?
ZIJCAR Trucks come standard with a host of advanced active safety features to help protect the driver, the vehicle, and road users. All ZIJCAR Trucks have Active Brake Assist (ABA) collision mitigation, Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Active Side Guard Assist (ASA), all as standard equipment. These advanced systems complement the 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution, Hill Start Assist System to prevent rolling backward on a slope, and a backup camera.

The high voltage system offers an emergency stop button and a battery G-Sensor to shut off the HV system in emergencies.
Do ZIJCAR vehicles support Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology?
Currently, ZIJCAR trucks do not support V2G technology, but we are always evaluating features and market opportunities.

Service

What are the maintenance requirements for ZIJCAR trucks?
Preventative maintenance for ZIJCAR trucks is minimal, consisting mainly of regular multi-point vehicle and component inspections. Since there is no internal combustion engine, there are fewer moving parts and less scheduled maintenance. Regular monitoring of the cooling system, fluid levels, suspension, brakes, and tire tread and pressures (as with a conventional vehicle), will lead to ideal performance.
What is the powertrain lifetime of the vehicle?
As with any vehicle, component life and wear are dependent on the drive cycle, route, driver behavior, environmental factors, and other variables. We expect the powertrain lifetime to meet or exceed the lifetime of a similarly driven internal combustion engine platform.
Does ZIJCAR offer a warranty on the vehicles?
ZIJCAR’s standard warranty for model year 2024 is 5 years/120,000 miles on HV battery and 5 years/75,000 miles on the entire vehicle, powertrain, and electronic components. ZIJCAR's standard warranty for model year 2025 is 8 years/185,000 miles on HV battery, 8 years/120,000 miles on powertrain, and electronic components, 5 years/75,000 miles on rest of the vehicle.
Are you CARB certified?
Yes! ZIJCAR trucks are CARB-certified and qualify for HVIP incentives.
Can ZIJCAR recycle old batteries?
EV battery packs are not easily recyclable, although we are working with the industry to change this. We are also investigating opportunities to redeploy EV batteries in less-demanding applications such as microgrids and mobile charging stations. Your dealer, ZIJCAR eConsulting team, and industry partners can assist you with the battery end-of-life disposal.
